Southwold barely puts a beach hut out of line, let alone a crumbling amusement arcade. The Suffolk town is one of England’s last coastal havens: a charming, finely-manicured old place which makes for a good getaway regardless of whether there’s a quartet of German robots in town.

But what a coup Kraftwerk are, if the frenzy surrounding their recent shows at the Tate Modern is anything to go by. They head up the bill on Saturday, which also features, in Hot Chip and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, just two of many who owe the krautrockers’ innovations a debt of thanks.

So, it’s a pleasure – and given the demographic range of 2013 festival-goers, a shrewd move – to see new rubbing shoulders with old. Sandwiching electro night is a solid complement of indie mainstays and sure-fire future trend-setters. Friday sees a welcome festival return for Bloc Party; on the Sunday it’s Grizzly Bear and, brimming with righteousness and power from new album Holy Fire, Foals.

That poster reveals strength in depth the more you look it up and down. Mercury Prize-winners Alt-J head up the BBC Radio 6 Stage alongside Modest Mouse. As for Culture or Trash, you’ll spot us squabbling over whether it’s Yo La Tengo or Chvrches on the Friday, and making up again during the sunset warmth of Local Natives’ new LP, on closing night.
