Isle of Wight Festival: Culture

“DUH! Hendrix?!” was what Taylor Momsen said when we asked her, “Why the Isle of Wight Festival?” last year. Little J from Gossip Girl had a point. Pre-dating Glastonbury and, therefore, pre-dating most currently-alive V Festival goers, Isle of Wight Festival is perhaps more iconic, you might say, than her majesty herself. This year’s line up typically forfeits trendy or scene-y music, taking instead a slow amble through some of the staples of the decades: Paolo Nutini, Pharrell Williams, The Prodigy and The Black Keys might be called contemporary when pinned up next to the real festival pull – Fleetwood Mac – or Nineties brat pack Blur.

The pull of Fleetwood Mac and a Seventies aesthetic will be lost on some at The Isle of Wight Festival, but we have no doubt the silent disco later on will be replete with teens yelping “I WANNA BE WITH YOU EVERYWHERE!” to their spotty other-halves after half a stolen can. Other less classic, more wavy stuffs to happen at the countries’ oldest romp in a field include an area to pretend to be a Seventies hippy in (The Bohemian Woods); a place to pretend to be a Redneck in (Jack Rocks Stage) and a place to drink cider high up in a pretend tree in (Strongbow Tree).
